Psychological Testing
and Evaluation
What is psychological testing and evaluation?
Psychological testing involves the administration of written and verbal tests and questionnaires, designed to look at specific aspects of an individual, such as personality, emotional, cognitive, or behavioral functioning.
A psychological evaluation is a comprehensive, multi-step process used to answer broader questions about diagnosis, treatment, and recommendations. It includes psychological testing, as well as a clinical interview, obtaining information from other sources, a review of medical and educational records, behavioral observations, a feedback session, and a written report of integrated findings and recommendations.
Although the evaluation process can seem intimidating, our clients usually leave with a sense of relief, clarity, and empowerment to begin the process of getting appropriate treatment and support.
Types of Testing We Offer
-
Cognitive
Evaluates skills such as memory, attention, problem-solving, and processing to better understand an individual’s cognitive strengths and needs.
-
Social-Emotional
Assesses for emotional well-being, social skills, coping strategies, and how an individual manages relationships and everyday challenges.
-
Behavioral
Examines behavior patterns across different settings to identify concerns, strengths, and strategies for meaningful support.
-
Personality
Provides insight into personality traits, behavior patterns, and how an individual may think, feel, and interact with others.
What does the process look like?
1. Intake Appointment
During the intake, the provider will gather a history of symptoms and relevant background information as well as administer screening measures to determine the appropriateness of testing. The first session typically lasts 2-3 hours.
2. Psychological Testing
A second appointment is scheduled to administer various psychological assessments. Testing can take 4-6 hours depending on the complexity of the case. You may be asked to complete written, verbal, and/or computerized tests and questionnaires.
3. Analysis of Data
During the next 2-3 weeks, your provider will gather collateral data from your provided sources; score and interpret the data from testing, observations, and received records; and write up a formal report that will be sent to you after the feedback session.
3. Feedback session
The provider will contact you to schedule your feedback session about 4-6 weeks after testing. During the one-hour feedback session, the provider will go over the report, including the results, diagnosis, areas of strength, and treatment recommendations. Your provider will also work with you to assist in your next steps.
